Research suggests that people who are hard of hearing require a signal to noise ratio increase of about 15 to 25 dB to achieve the same level of understanding as people with normal hearing. An assistive listening device (ALD) can help achieve this gain. Assistive listening devices include wireless accessories for TVs and phones, alerting and signaling devices, and personal or large area assistive devices, such as induction loop systems and telecoils. This course will review the rationale for and benefits of each type of technology and how to develop a recommendation matrix for ALDs.
